Butoh attempts to affirm the dance which lies within the body--the body is, in itself, contmplated as a small univers..." -Goda Nario, "on Ankoku Butoh"

"The Poetic Body Butoh" is an internal meditation through dance. In this class, students will explore the process of reshaping ones experience though body awareness and image work. Nothing is ever as we think it is. The body is a constantly changing form. This work can go from slow, intensive focus to quick chaos. To become what you are doing and to not merely pretending is our aim.

In Butoh, we move from metaphors and atmosphere added to the body until we become sometimes unknown even to the self. Imagination: fluid, flowing like lightening coursing through the veins of a tree and a fish swimming in your stomach. We begin to understand that moving nature is a paradox in space and time. It is exposed and present. Students will become aware of stillness, disappearing, holding and exploding through solo, partner and group exercises.

Class is open to all levels of movement experience.
