WORKSHOP:
"The Poetic Body" Butoh Master Class
Eliot Street Collective

Date: August 17 (Sunday)
Time: 10am-3pm

$50.00 for 5 hour workshop
Space is limited.

Butoh attempts to affirm the dance which lies within the body--the body is, in itself, contmplated as a small univers..." -Goda Nario, "on Ankoku Butoh"

"The Poetic Body Butoh" is an internal meditation through dance. In this class, students will explore the process of reshaping ones experience though body awareness and image work. Nothing is ever as we think it is. The body is a constantly changing form. This work can go from slow, intensive focus to quick chaos. To become what you are doing and to not merely pretending is our aim.

In Butoh, we move from metaphors and atmosphere added to the body until we become sometimes unknown even to the self. Imagination: fluid, flowing like lightening coursing through the veins of a tree and a fish swimming in your stomach. We begin to understand that moving nature is a paradox in space and time. It is exposed and present. Students will become aware of stillness, disappearing, holding and exploding through solo, partner and group exercises.

Class is open to all levels of movement experience.

The Instructor: Jennifer Hicks M.F.A, R.Y.T is an instructor at Naropa University in the MFA in Contemporary Performance Department and hails as a performer, choreographer, teacher and artist. She received her MFA from Naropa University in Contemporary Performance and BFA from Tufts University. She was also a recipient of the Traveling Scholars Award from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her interest in Butoh sparked in the mid 1980's and she began to study seriously in 1994. Since then, she has been dancing with KASTURA Kan in his international Butoh company for over 8 years and has founded her own company, Fragile Creep which will be performing this summer in the Boston area and in Colorado. Review:
URINETOWN, The Musical
The Dairy Center For The Arts (Boulder)

Urinetown. The title is revolting, the story line is absurd, the lines are cheesy to the power of 10, the acting and singing range from adequate to exceptional... and everyone within a hundred miles of The Dairy Center in Boulder should make it to this play sometime between now and July 27! Yes, it’s that good.

There’s no way to prepare for the trip you’ll be taken on through this more than slightly demented musical account of a community struggling to survive in a devestated post-draught world where the almost-penniless populous must line up soup kitchen style and pay high fees for the privilege of peeing as part of the government’s effort to save water.
With almost every modern musical theatre hit being spoofed in the process, each obviously borrowed "big production number", formula song, generic choreographed dance style, and over-used corny line from Broadway is reworked, warped, wrapped in more corny dialog, and served up with very appropriate over-the-top delivery.

Don’t let the title dissuade you. For all its references to certain necessary bodily functions, nary a line actually offends even the most offendable. The expected off-color innuendos, gross references, or cheap, disgusting jokes that one might expect to draw mass groans are happily absent. It’s hard to explain, but in the most bizarre, silly, stupid, implausible way, the whole thing actually makes sense! And, it’s really, really funny!

As in any community theatre effort, some of the acting and singing is 'Wow!' quality, and some is not. In this particular show (June 20, Cast B), the 'Wow‘s' are offered in strong vocal performances by Lexi Strickland (Hope Cladwell) and Devyn Cordes (Penelope Pennywise). Danny Irwin (Bobby Strong), Keira Mountain (Little Sally), and Michael Ciaglo (Caldwell B Cladwell) keep the show rolling with believable characterizations of profoundly unbelievable characters. John Balch (Officer Lockstock) and his worthy assistant Lena Antman (Officer Barrel) provide ‘meanwhile, back at the sewer” summaries to keep everything tied together for the audience.

Urinetown is a CenterStage Production. Ileane Olson is the producer. Jeanie Balch directs and does a splendid job of pulling off such a nonsensical show with obvious polish. Daniel Graeber, local pianist extraordinaire, is the Music Director. Louisa Balch’s choreography brings the show to life with very well executed, perfectly over-done dance numbers.

The band (Daniel Graeber, Paul Farus, Colin Spear, and Max Ripple) creates one of the show’s most entertaining ‘characters’- the quirky music, but unfortunately, at times it is loud enough to cover important dialog which struggles some to reach the audience through less-than-crisp michrophones. The Dairy Center provides a charming ‘black box’ theatre environment for shows like Urinetown. Maybe someday someone will generously donate them a better sound system.

Go see Urinetown if you haven’t. See it again, if you have. It’s a hoot- and proves for once and for all that any subject can be turned into a main stage, over-the-top, no holes barred (pardon the pun), laugh-out-very-loud, rollicking musical!

The show is double-cast, which means that different casts perform on different nights. The schedule for the rest of the performances is:
Cast A:
7:00 PM Shows
July 23, 25, 26

Cast B:
7:00 PM Shows
July 24

1:00 PM Shows
July 26, 27

The Dairy Center For The Arts is located at:
2950 Walnut St., Boulder, CO

Tickets are $10 and $14.
For reservations by phone, call FrontGate Tickets at 888-512-7469.
To purchase online, go to:
http://www.thedairy.org/ or http://www.centerstagetheatrecompany.org/

Warning: “Go before you go.” Or, if you need to ‘go’ during the intermission, be sure to take your ‘good for one free pee' coupon with you when you head toward the facilities. One complimentary coupon is found in each program. Characters of the show will actually be collecting the 'pee coupons' at the restroom door- and rumor has it that Officer Lockstock is more than willing to arrest anyone to tries to gain unauthorized entry to the restrooms. In other words, even during the intermission, the show keeps going… and going… and going…

Theater: Only a few make living from stage alone
By John Moore, Denver Post Theater Critic
Reprinted from the Denver Post

Wendy Ishii made $1,000 a day acting on a soap opera.

She now makes $500 a month teaching theater at a state university, and $14,000 a year running Fort Collins' Bas Bleu, one of the region's most respected theater companies.

"That tells you how much we value teachers and artists in this country," said Ishii, who can keep managing her 16-year-old theater for one reason: "Because I am married to a neuroscientist who believes theater is just as important as curing Alzheimer's.

"But if I were a single mom, no way."

They used to say most actors in Colorado perform for gas money. But with the cost of fuel these days, not even that's true anymore.

Bas Bleu pays every actor $200 for the entire run of a play, "whether they
have one line or 10,000," said Ishii. Factoring in rehearsal and performance time, that's less than $1 an hour. And that's common.

Colorado has 97 theater companies, but only seven that belong to Actor's Equity, the union that mandates minimum salaries for its actors, of whom 327 live (but not many gainfully work) in Colorado.

Only about 150 people can claim to make full-time salaries in the theater here. And what they make varies greatly. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts employs 80 year-round theater workers, led by president Randy Weeks at $265,000, and theater company artistic director Kent Thompson at $205,001 (predecessor Donovan Marley made $339,767 in 2002).
The Denver Center hires about 50 seasonal actors, but they get paid only for the weeks they work. And only about eight of them get full seasons of work, which is about 36 weeks of pay.
"And we are the lucky ones," said Sam Gregory, who last summer was also a guest actor for the non-union Paragon Theatre's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."

The Denver Center pays its actors minimums that range from $555 to $816 a week, as dictated by its contract with Actors Equity. Some make more. If they work enough weeks, they qualify for health insurance. That makes for a living, but is hardly an extravagant wage, said Gregory, who spent 20 years as an acting gypsy before finding a home with the Denver Center Theatre Company.

Smaller union theaters don't offer as many performances, so their minimums are lower. Curious Theatre must pay actors at least $250 a week; the Aurora Fox, $187. No union theater runs 52 weeks a year, but say the Aurora Fox did. If one actor managed to get cast in every show, he still wouldn't clear $10,000 for the year.

When Paragon landed Gregory, Equity set his wage at $3,400 for 10 weeks of work. That's far below his Denver Center pay, but it still necessitated a special fundraising campaign by Paragon's board. His onstage wife, played by nonunion actor Martha Harmon Pardee, made $300 — total.
Both won Denver Post Ovation Awards. That's how silly it is to try to equate artistic excellence with compensation.

Other companies tie wages to attendance. Germinal Stage-Denver pays a $150 minimum stipend against a percentage of the net, up to $450.

Buntport Theater recently became one of the state's few full-time professional ensembles. After years of paying themselves $19,000 a year and working as many second jobs as they could get, they decided enough's enough: Everyone gets $30,000 and works at Buntport full time.

"We consider ourselves very lucky, but we worked awfully hard to get to the point where we could make a living wage," said Erin Rollman. "But it was a necessary step in order for us to be true to our mission statement. Working full time at the theater means we will be able to do more and better work."

But the fact is, "most of the people you see in plays at night have spent their days working in an office or at a restaurant," said Gregory. "They do it for the love of it."

What choice do they have? With apologies to Beckett: They can't go on. They must go on.
